‘Colour is used in another large-scale series of works called The Carousel by Trevor Newman at the Oedipus Rex Gallery. Red predominates because it symbolises the hectic in the blood. Trevor Newman does noy address particular issues but the whole tension in relationships between women and men. The Carousel provides horses whose heads following a long tradition become symbols of wayward passion. Women dominate in these figurative paintings which show great skill in drawing and composition. The setting is located by showing Rangitoto in the background of some paintings but this is not as important as intrwoven female figures that symbolise a variety of emotions recalling Rubens in an earlier age.’
